Explorer freezes on Windows 10 for Envy 13 users.
Hey, your HP Envy 13 runs an i5-8265U with 8GB RAM and Windows 10. I bought it about a month ago and began using it only a week later. Recently, I noticed a serious issue: whenever I open File Explorer and a folder with any document, the app freezes and stops responding until I force it to close in Task Manager. It works fine when I double-click, but even a single click on a file—whether it's a PPT, DOC, or Excel file—causes the application to hang. I switched default apps to OpenOffice thinking it would fix things, but it also stopped working. The worst part happened when I tried to close it in Task Manager; the whole desktop turned blue and didn’t move. This only happens with those specific file types, not PDFs or music files. It’s a brand-new laptop, and I’m really frustrated with how unreliable these devices can be. My Office license expired today, and the problem started right then. I thought it might be related to my expired license or a conflict with McAfee, but I’m not sure. I have Avast running as an antivirus, and it prompted me to restart for updates. It mentioned a resource conflict with McAfee and asked me to grant it privileges. Could you help? I have many assignments due and can’t afford another broken laptop.
I would close it once and the fans reacted strongly. Otherwise nothing stood out. Checked Task Manager; unsure if it was unusual, but disk usage increased briefly during that time. Deleted the file explorer history as suggested, and after doing so I stopped the issue quickly.
