With the release of GOOGLE STADIA, will YouTube and Twitch cease offering GAME STREAMING? Will viewers continue to watch live streams and gaming videos on these platforms? Essentially, will GOOGLE STADIA eliminate game streaming from YouTube and Twitch?
Amazon’s Twitch Interactive is a division of the company, not Google's, and therefore should continue to operate. It’s unclear whether Stadia will succeed and force Twitch to modify its operations or cease to exist.
Stadia intends to leverage YouTube’s server infrastructure. Stadia will offer a dual approach: a platform for purchasing games similar to Steam, and another where games can be uploaded or streamed live.
It’s unlikely YouTube's features will significantly change, as Google continues to refer to the server network as belonging to YouTube. Perhaps we’ll see advertisements for Stadia subscriptions or introductory periods appearing on the platform.
Consider this: if YouTube ceased to function, those servers would shift to support Stadia’s direct streaming, resulting in a substantial loss of content from individuals who have uploaded videos. This would undoubtedly frustrate many existing YouTube users and raise significant concerns about the valuable advertising space currently utilized by YouTube.
Investing heavily in a completely new and largely unproven direct streaming service undoubtedly presents risks, particularly for advertisers who currently rely on YouTube’s established platform. Such substantial alterations require careful management, and dismantling YouTube is not a viable strategy.
My primary reservation about Stadia’s potential for sustained competition with established gaming purchasing and playing methods is their plan to initially port games to Linux, mirroring Valve’s approach with Steam Box.
Valve asserted that Linux-porting would enhance performance, and they are seasoned game developers. However, most of their translated games performed worse than their original Windows counterparts, with only a few achieving comparable results.
The failure of the Steam Box was attributable to various factors, but the diminished performance of ported games served as a critical turning point. Similar issues could plague Stadia.
