Experiencing odd Windows 10 problems? Are you alone in this?
I chose to start another thread since the previous one about sleep problems was limited to a single machine. These issues tend to occur on most Windows 10 PCs at least once each month. Today, two of them happened to me recently, so given that I rely on Windows for both gaming and work, I thought it would be wise to avoid unusual problems. I’m not using outdated or low-spec systems; my ThinkPad runs Linux smoothly. There’s no evidence of viruses—just cautious browsing and safe software use. The Windows 10 setup I have is fully licensed by my university (Education edition) and always up to date, with no access to unofficial programs.
The search feature in the start menu stopped functioning unexpectedly. A common fix is to restart Windows Explorer through Task Manager. The main menu fails to open completely, while other apps remain operational—restarting Explorer usually resolves it. Copy-pasting and hotkeys (like Win+R or ALT+F4) work normally when other tasks are running.
The icon click issue is minor; the hidden tray area sometimes shifts when clicked. Restarting Explorer seems to clear the problem, which has happened several times over the years.
I usually spend my time on Windows 10 handling games, browsing, Spotify, virtual machines, WSL with SSH, and Discord. I don’t believe people are experiencing serious issues beyond occasional slowdowns. My experience is similar to others who use Linux for stable performance—Windows 7 had its own quirks, but these problems are rare and not as severe. The best I’ve seen is minor lag, which doesn’t disrupt my workflow much.
Using the latest stable version of Windows 10 seems to be the most reliable option. If you need a more consistent experience, consider opting for an enterprise license with Long-Term Support (LTS) builds.
Details? No problems with the W10 that caused me frustration since launch. (Minus the start menu clutter)
I don't face any of the problems mentioned, and my configuration is similar to yours (WSL, VM, etc.). The only issue I encountered was with the Action Center bar animation, which appears once when starting an explorer.exe. This has already been resolved for users in the Insider program. It will be included in a future update or fixed in the next Windows release.
