I've been experimenting with Private Internet Access recently. It seems to be working well overall. The iOS version feels intuitive and maintains my connection without noticeable lag. The only hiccup was using the VPN on my phone to control a Phillips Hue bridge, which forced me to rely on a physical light switch instead of the app. To resolve this, I installed it on my router so all devices could connect securely. I began researching and discovered dd-wrt as a solid custom ROM option (I've never updated firmware before, but it was enjoyable!) and started troubleshooting PIA functionality. My initial setup didn’t go smoothly—I thought I followed instructions perfectly, yet certain sites remained inaccessible. After restoring from a backup and retrying, success was minimal. Now, most content loads, but location-based services and the official site still fail. I’m uncertain about my approach. My network configuration appears to clash with the setup instructions. I’m connected via Ethernet to the main router, which uses a different SSID for privacy. The WAN connection type is set to Automatic DHCP, but the guide suggests switching to Static IP. This might be the issue, especially since I’m still learning network adjustments. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
What model and brand of your router are you using? I'm checking because DD-WRT works well, but Shibby Tomato / Advanced Tomato might be better if your device supports it. Also, it looks like the NVRAM might not have been fully cleared after installing DD-WRT. When flashing firmware, you should perform a factory reset twice: once before the flash and again after setting the DD-WRT root password and logging in. This seems confusing since you already have DD-WRT installed and are prompted for admin credentials—routers often behave this way.
My device is a Netgear R6250. I installed the Kong update there. It might have been a mistake to reset the internal memory, I really don’t recall.
