Experiencing extremely hot conditions at 12700k plus 3080
I switched to this setup a few months back and the heat has been an issue ever since. I frequently check online benchmarks, but the numbers people share don’t align with what I’m experiencing. Let’s look at the key details:
The case comes with the usual fan setup—two fronts drawing air in and one back pushing it out. For the CPU, I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste, which I applied correctly. I tested both Arctic MX-4 and Noctua NT H-2 pastes, but results were similar.
My room’s ambient temperature is currently between 23-24°C in summer. At benchmarks, the CPU hits 95°C+; to protect it, I limited its speed to 4.8 GHz. The motherboard’s Vcore settings are unusual—most boards offer adaptive control, but Gigabyte doesn’t seem to support that feature clearly. Idle temps fluctuate wildly, hovering around 40-50°C. Right now I’m at about 55°C.
Running Furmark at 4K with full fans is pushing things. Synthetic workloads don’t reflect real-world heat, but I’ve noticed most sites show the 12700k running smoothly at 60-70°C max. In older titles, it often stays at 70-80°C. To avoid overheating, I’ve limited the CPU’s TDP to the minimum needed for performance.
The GPU is a bit better, but still struggles. I had to lower its clock speed via Intel XTU to keep temps down. Memory junctions and hotspots are running hotter than ideal—sometimes reaching 95°C during games. This setup has been consistent for years; my old rig with an 8700K handled it fine without problems.
I’ve considered adding more Arctic P14 fans, but the gain is minimal (only 2-3°C). A full AIO cooler seems like a last resort, though I’d rather avoid water in the system. Noctua DH15 is solid for air cooling. Any advice would be appreciated!
It's a bit warm but not overly so. Likely not ideal for cooling either. Verify if the CPU throttles in underclocking—HWInfo64 indicates this might be happening, though I don't see it clearly. The GPU is performing well, staying around 70°C, which is normal. Check GPUZ to see what's limiting performance; it could be related to VRAM or other factors (which is typical). Personally, I wouldn't rush for premium components unless they guarantee solid cooling. My setup usually stays around 60°C, so it's manageable. If you go with expensive parts, ensure proper ventilation or accept the heat. Consider removing the side panel and running all fans at full speed to test.
