Hey everyone, I just got a third monitor and it’s been acting up. My main screen is 27 inches, 165Hz, 2K with G-SYNC. The second one is a 27-inch 1080p Samsung, and the third is a 24-inch 1080p Samsung as well. My GPU and CPU are a 2080Ti and a Ryzen 9 5900X. Sometimes I experience strange freezes, especially when watching something on YouTube like this. I’ve got the latest BIOS and it still happens. Before the third monitor, the issue didn’t exist. I format my PC and nothing changes. Also, on hwmonitor I see CPU power spikes. My PSU is a 750W Gold Gigabyte. Any thoughts? Thanks!
The 2080ti should manage three monitors in 2D sleep without problems, and the CPU performance is expected to be solid. However, expect some heat buildup—high temperatures are possible. There might be an unusual pause state; check the temperatures if needed. Are there any background processes running, and have you performed a malware scan recently?
If your mouse uses USB, you might try changing the port. That can sometimes help. Also, Ryzens have a great sense of humor about RAM. It's really funny. I'm more familiar with this after struggling with my 5900X setup for a while. It could be worth checking if your RAM model appears on the board manufacturer's QVL list for Vermeer processors (5000-series). Even if the recommended RAM is suitable, faulty chips or DIMMs are still possible (I actually had a working kit). It seems that single-rank versus dual-rank configurations can also cause problems, depending on the setup (like 2x8, 2x16, 4x4, etc.). In my case, I experienced a hard crash (fans still working, RGB on by default), wouldn't wake from sleep mode, and occasional random no-video POST failures after every 8-12 cold starts. I even returned the board because the RAM wasn't QVL'd for my system, causing issues similar to yours on another board, and I recalled an older version of the same SKU on a third board that also had problems. The RAM model wasn't QVL'd for any of the three, and swapping it with a recommended version resolved both issues on my newer boards. The issue occurred after I unplugged the PC, put on the monitor and turned it back on. It’s really strange, honestly. The CPU temperature is around 45 degrees during idle, and the GPU is about 40 degrees in idle.
I've experienced these rams for about six months, and everything was fine until I reconnected the PC to the third monitor.
FYI, OP, one of the DIMMs I used before led to a persistent Win10 hourglass cursor on another system. No freezing occurred, but the recurring hourglass was quite bothersome. Testing with the other DIMM didn’t resolve the issue, which had previously caused a complete POST failure. That situation resolved once we switched to replacement DIMMs that followed QVL recommendations, bringing both machines back to normal.
In general, RAM instability might lead to unexpected problems you wouldn’t normally expect from memory modules. Both my Asus Tuf B550-PLUS and an ASRock B450M-HDV that replaced the faulty units during RMA performed poorly, acting like damaged components. Swapping them with Asus QVL-compliant Patriot Viper 4 Blackout (PVB432G320C6K) using identical timing and voltage parameters eliminated the issues completely. Earlier DIMMs also failed in the ASRock B450M, so we replaced them with Ballistix BL2K16G36C16U4B before the ASUS board was returned from RMA due to an unresolved duplicate problem.
Reuniting with the original parts in another case using Ballistix BL2K16G36C16U4B worked flawlessly. Previously, the same kit caused more complications on an older MSI B450M Bazooka. Adding a GPU, M.2 slot, and new RAM to that setup also resulted in a no-video POST failure with the VGA light. The board would shut down after several attempts using that RAM and GPU combination.
Currently, the DIMMs still show varying speeds in BIOS, which I confirmed after this recent troubleshooting. I intend to address this in future builds. Notably, Ballistix BL2K16G32C16U4B is available on any QVL list across three different boards I’ve encountered with problems. It’s interesting that the only person who acknowledged this SKU is someone familiar with an Intel Coffee Lake build from a previous order.
This situation usually indicates the process functioned properly for us.
