Experience unusual drops in performance when using RTX 4080.
Hello everyone, welcome! If you think I posted in the wrong category or need help, just let me know. I set up my PC about a month ago with these specs: AMD Ryzen 7800X3D, MSI Ventus 3x RTX 4080, two 16GB G-Skill Trident-Z Neo 6000MHz RAM modules, Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold, ASROCK B650M PRO RS WIFI, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD, and Samsung 870 QVO 4TB SSD. It generally runs smoothly. However, after playing games for a few hours or idling for about eight hours while watching videos or browsing on Reddit, performance drops significantly. The first game I tried still ran as expected, but once I switch to another application or task, frame rates drop by nearly half—often to around 20-40 FPS instead of the usual 80-90. This issue occurs with many games like Fortnite, Alan Wake, Cyberpunk, etc., and causes noticeable stutters.
I've followed several troubleshooting steps: reinstalled both NVIDIA and AMD drivers using DDU in safe mode, installed the AMD chipset driver directly from the AMD website, updated the BIOS to version 2.02, booted with v1.28 on my motherboard (which didn't support XMP before), and ran Windows utilities like sfc /scannow and changed the power plan to High Performance. The GPU usage stays high in the 90s until it fails, after which FPS drops further. I’m only getting around 80 on the GPU and 65 on the CPU, with clocks looking normal. The most puzzling part is that everything works perfectly after a restart.
Have anyone else experienced this? Do you know what troubleshooting steps might help? I've seen many Reddit threads about similar problems, but none of them worked for me so far. I don’t want to keep restarting my PC just to fix something that shouldn’t be happening.
Best,
Kamil
Test the items mentioned and let me know if anything resolves the problem. I'll update your original entry with the adjusted version and include the PowerShell script output from step 4 in the appropriate format.
Set language to Python.
Hi @Robchil, I've installed Samsung Magician and verified both drives have the latest firmware. I've reinstalled the chipset drivers. I already have the newest BIOS and regularly check the AsRock website for updates. I also switched the PCIE to Gen4 on the 16x slot in the AMD settings within the BIOS, hoping that could help. If that doesn't resolve the issue, I'll attempt a BIOS reset and then reinstall if needed. It may take a few days to test all possibilities. By the way, the screenshot from GPU-Z was taken under load (Fortnite open on another monitor), and I also tested it with the built-in utility. I should note this point.
Check if PCI Express Native Power Management is turned off in the UEFI settings. Review Device Manager for any Bluetooth drivers that might be missing.
I don't rely on one. 1 & 2. I'll check the power management after seeing the issue again; currently everything works fine. After playing multiple games for about five hours, performance is normal. Perhaps the BIOS PCIe setting was changed to gen4 instead of auto-fixing it—I hope that helped. I'll update you soon. 3. It worked, I didn't realize it before since I didn't need Bluetooth. If the fix succeeded, I'll share a tutorial on adjustments for others facing similar problems. I've been troubleshooting this for weeks.
I can understand what you're going through, glad to hear it's not unique. Curious if your problem has been fixed. I own a 4080 Super MSI and 7800X3D; after switching between sleep/wake modes on my PC, my GPU usage drops by 10-12% from 99%, causing FPS drops and stutters while playing CyberPunk. After restarting, the game runs at 99% with improved performance. You’ve also reinstalled your GPU, chipset, BIOS, and DDU drivers. I haven’t reinstalled the OS yet and have experimented with power management settings. My PCIe x16 is set to Gen 4. Looking into it, connecting the PC directly to a wall outlet might help. I have a power surge connected and haven’t tried it yet, but it could resolve the issue. I also saw a video about disabling the C State in BIOS to keep the CPU active—maybe useful for dual monitors, though I’m not sure if it applies to my setup.
