I recently purchased a PC equipped with a 3060 Ti, Ryzen 5 5600X, and 16GB of RAM. I’ve started experiencing occasional stutters in frame rates and even freezing screens for a few seconds. These issues mainly occur in open-world games like Fortnite or GTA V, where the map is large, but not in smaller maps such as Overwatch or CS:GO. I think this is unusual since the 3060 Ti should handle these games smoothly without any problems. In Fortnite, for instance, I set the FPS to 60 and enabled VSync because of my monitor. When waiting in the lobby, the game would stutter and drop below 60 FPS for a second. I suspect this is normal since it’s just loading the map. However, in games with fully loaded maps, I still see FPS drops to 45 or 20 when stuck at 60, which seems odd given that running at 60 should be stress-free. I also notice sudden 1 FPS drops that cause the screen to freeze for about two seconds. I checked the CPU and GPU temperatures and usage, they’re normal. The SSD isn’t full, and I recently installed Windows. Nothing seems to have changed. I considered my 720p 60Hz monitor because at that resolution the CPU was working harder than the GPU, but switching it to a 1080p TV didn’t fix the problem. What might be causing these FPS drops and screen freezes?

Consider turning off HPET, which might help reduce occasional stutters. This setting is usually enabled by default but can cause performance issues in some situations. I noticed this problem while experiencing minor lag during gameplay, even though my PC could handle the tasks smoothly.

I turned it off and it keeps happening. It looks like I can maintain steady frames, but locking it at 60fps doesn’t guarantee a solid 60fps—still seeing drops to around 28.

run gpuz in the background during a Fortnite session for 5 to 10 minutes, then capture a screenshot of its performance tab.
