Expansion support for x470/5600X in M.2 slots
Hey everyone. I'm trying to boost my PC storage but it's feeling a bit overwhelming (still getting the hang of it). My system runs an MSI X470 gaming PC with a 5600X CPU. Both of my M.2 slots currently hold 1TB drives, and I'm planning to upgrade one of them. I was thinking about using the existing drive for future expansion with an ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 card, but I'm a bit concerned about compatibility. My CPU supports 24 lanes, with 16 dedicated to the GPU. I'm wondering if this upgrade would affect my GPU performance or if I should go for a larger NVMe drive instead and sell the other one.
ASUS Hyper cards are mainly suited for Threadripper/EPYC systems because of the PCIE lane setup. They sometimes end up on costly x670e/x870e/z890 boards, but GPUs running Gen 4/Gen 5 8x still work well for most of them. For the x470, it stays on PCIE Gen 3 which can impact performance. I’d recommend opting for a larger drive instead of overloading the PCIe lane.
Do you require extremely rapid data storage? For manufacturing tasks? Then placing a SATA drive would be seamless and unnoticeable. Likely the simplest option.
Thank you for the responses. The increase in speed is significant.
