The laptop you mentioned has a Celeron M processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. Would this setup suit your needs? You're aiming for a balance between a lightweight operating system and compatibility with older Windows and DOS applications. I'm uncertain about its performance with a full virtual machine—MS DOS 6.22 works after minor adjustments, and Windows 3.1 is functional with XP already installed.

It might be feasible, but consider alternatives beyond Ubuntu. At least explore Xubuntu, but aim for something even lighter on the Linux side since it can help you use more RAM. It should work fine on XP as well, requiring minimal resources.

Checking memory consumption (on Ubuntu desktop) shows about 2GB is currently being used out of the 16GB available.
