I’m trying to understand what would be needed to run both HexOS and Windows on one computer at the same time. I’m not very familiar with software setups and want something straightforward that works without too much hassle. I’m open to other ideas or solutions, even if they aren’t perfect for me.

My situation is:
- Current PC: Intel i9-14900K, 3080, 32GB DDR5, 2.5Gb Ethernet
- NAS storage: 4TB SSD
- Living room PC: Intel i7-8700K, 3060 Ti, 32GB DDR4, 1Gb Ethernet
- Storage: 1TB SSD on the living room machine
- Router: Linksys EA9500V2, all devices connected via Ethernet
- Goal: Play games on the living room TV and have a NAS running for files, photos, Plex, maybe security cameras

I want to keep the living room TV for gaming and still have a NAS available. I’m not sure if dual booting is necessary or how to switch between OSes easily. I also don’t want to deal with complex configurations or frequent troubleshooting.

Questions I have:
- Is it possible to install two operating systems on one machine? How challenging would that be?
- Can both run at the same time without major issues? Would switching from NAS to gaming TV be smooth?
- Should I consider buying a more affordable computer just for the NAS?
- Would a USB-NVENC cable from my main PC work well for the living room TV?

I appreciate any advice, even if it’s not the best fit. Thanks a lot!

Only one OS can manage hardware at once. It’s better to run HexOS, then use Win-OS as a guest inside a VM built on top of it.

Network sharing on Windows comes with built-in capabilities. It should be simpler than using HEX OS or another NAS system, and organizing storage in a RAID setup can boost performance when done correctly.

It wasn't something I expected to find running in HexOS. Seems to be a notable capability... Appreciate the feedback! I'll explore further.

I forgot there was a way to make a NAS just out of windows. I'll look into it to see if I can manage what I need with just Windows. Thanks!!

Click the folder with the right-click menu, select properties, then choose sharing options. This gives you a basic setup. It's a better alternative to installing a new operating system.
