I saw this happen a few months back when using iTunes. Drag-and-drop stopped working if I ran it as an administrator. (Question for you—why do we need admin rights even though we’re supposed to be the ones managing things?) It’s the same with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, VLC and Notepad, basically all of them. Why would giving admin status block something that’s so handy? Could be security, a bug, or just some weird setting?

The necessity to operate in admin mode stems from historical systems where everything ran under the admin account. This includes handling malware effectively. If malware is properly configured to run with admin privileges, it can perform extensive actions on your PC—such as stopping its own shutdown, disabling antivirus software, and erasing files, even system files like system32. It’s not ideal, right? Now you must manually request admin access and grant the necessary permissions, often accompanied by screen dimming to block fake clicks that try to elevate privileges. Regarding your issue, it might mean the application isn’t running with admin rights. To access data from other admin-running processes, you need proper admin access. You can observe this limitation using tools like displayfusion, which only allows scrolling when the mouse wheel is under the mouse. There aren’t many options, so you may need to find alternative methods for moving files or avoid running it as admin. Curious why you still need admin privileges?

I investigated further and it relates to UAC and Windows sharing messages between windows for security purposes. I’m not entirely clear on why running as admin is necessary, but I just follow the prompt. It feels somewhat automatic to elevate programs.

Avoid executing tasks as administrator unless necessary, as this doesn’t add any benefits for most programs. Doing so can also remove useful features, and it’s inconvenient to manually choose admin mode each time instead of simply selecting the program normally.
