GTX 1070, no additional drives, and 32GB RAM. Current cost is $408 USD. I’m unsure how much more I’d be willing to spend. The real concern is upgrading from the 8700K—budgeting for VR gaming with an Oculus Rift Touch would be necessary. Not sure which forum to share this in.
The maximum I’d allocate is around $500, but I’d suggest staying under $450. A brand new setup (excluding the GPU, roughly $130 on eBay) would be about $400 plus the $130 for the 1070, totaling close to $550. Subtracting $100 for a used unit brings the estimate down to about $450. The 8700K remains a solid CPU choice for VR, though finding a reasonable price is the challenge.
VR demands significant GPU power because it often requires rendering two displays. A 4th generation i5 might work, but a 6th gen is better for the future. Consider buying an Optiplex or similar on eBay and connect a GPU via a strap. Make sure to verify compatibility, especially with ATX PSUs from some OEMs, and review advice before using adapters.
I strongly disagree about whether 4th gen i5 processors are sufficient for modern VR. Back when I first began exploring VR, my 6600k handled the workload perfectly.
They seem to be overlooking the GPU's role in the overall setup. A GPU might cost around 100$ while a CPU could be about 200$ for the board (price not specified). The build includes 32GB DDR4 RAM (price unknown), and the system could range from 80 to 150$ depending on components. Is it a full case with a power supply included? Also, the CPU might have a cooler costing between 50 to 150$ for a decent air cooler in the AIO line.
A $400 purchase brings you a fresh system with features close to the latest models. It would be great to have a stylish case and a solid PSU as well.
I wouldn't purchase such an outdated setup. Perhaps when GPUs were limited, but not anymore. Consensus. 4790k falls between a second and third generation Ryzen single-core models.
