either a broken sensor or a firmware bug most likely. obviously if the reading was accurate you'd have a small puddle and not a CPU.

100% either: A) Faulty sensor. B) Flawed software. It's safe to disregard it or attempt a BIOS update, though unless there are other major issues, I wouldn't recommend it.

I've refreshed the bios to the newest release, but it still displays 228C.

Thermal overload would have caused the system to shut down. Even if it didn’t, several components would melt at 228℃, including the lead-free solder and surface tension would prevent further movement. It could also damage the glue holding the IHS in place.

They operate according to the BIOS information. Updating the BIOS isn’t always required, especially with a UPS in place. A dual BIOS setup could be useful to avoid the board feeling heavy and problematic during the update process.
