Hey everyone. In 2020 we're asking: Should we upgrade the next build? CPU: i7-4790k, RAM: Asus Hero 7, HyperX Beast 1600mhz, 16GB, to a: CPU: i7-9700K, RAM: Asus ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WI-FI), LGA1151v2, Intel Z390, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4 3000MHz CL16, GPU: GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X

Are there any stutters or performance issues in the games you play? Have you tried increasing clock speeds or optimizing settings? If not, consider doing so before upgrading.

You have a solid system for an older PC. It seems the only parts that might need updating are the CPU socket and RAM, though the 4790K should still work fine.

they form a solid combination. improving the cpu isn't worth it unless you also upgrade the gpu. the same applies in reverse.

I purchased a Samsung 970 Pro Plus NVMe SSD, but didn’t realize my internet speed wouldn’t handle that. In PUBG, I also think I could have gotten better performance.

It’s worth mentioning that I won’t just lose money; I’ll be reselling these components. Instead of paying $1040, I’ll pay about half. Should I upgrade my GPU or get a 144-inch monitor?

Choose a 144hz monitor for better performance. Hyperthreading and multiple cores won’t change much in this case. Downgrade the CPU if possible, upgrade the cooling system, and consider pushing it to around 5ghz.

Your choice seems already decided. So far no one has fully supported your decision. Would you still spend $500 on a used build, or are you hoping someone else will? Used parts tend to be cheaper for a reason. Have you tested a 1866+ model with the HyperX Beast? Did you attempt overclocking? Do you use throttle stops? When a friend improves their performance, it might mean more than just a better CPU—what matters could be other factors.
