It doesn't have to be exactly eight, just more than four or six. Going over four or six usually means you should aim for eight or higher. You're free to try 4.5 by using any browser with multiple tabs while having MS Word and PowerPoint open simultaneously.

I’m running on an 8 GB system that barely works, while my new desktop will offer 16 GB and should be more stable. My software needs are heavy—Chrome tabs, VMWare Workstation, Wireshark, Microsoft Office, plus background apps during gaming sessions. I also run Sony Movie Studio 13 Platinum, which consumes a lot of resources.

While playing Witcher 3 (high settings), I consume around 7-7 gigabytes out of my 8 gigabyte capacity. I keep apps like opera, Skype, Steam, GOG Galaxy and Spotify running in the background. I’m thinking about adding another 8 more.

Auto CAD 3D modeling requires a lot of memory. It makes good use of the free RAM on my 16GB device.
