Ensuring physical compatibility means you're restricted by the slowest connection in the path. For example, pairing a 10Gb/s router with a Cat6 cable—capable of 10Gb/s up to certain lengths—and a computer with a 1Gb/s port limits your overall speed to 1Gb/s. This happens because the bottleneck defines the maximum rate. Even if you use faster cables like Cat6A or Cat7, they won't exceed the slower ports; similarly, a slow cable will still operate at its lowest possible speed.
