Hello! Welcome to PFSense setup. You're aiming to divide your 90GB connection among four devices—your phone, laptop, dad's phone, and dad's laptop—with a monthly cap of around 22.5GB per device. You want automatic restrictions during peak hours (8 AM to midnight), limiting usage to 10GB during those times, and disabling access afterward. You're already running PFSense and have some ideas, but you're looking for alternatives beyond the Captive portal's data limits. Consider exploring time-based policies or custom rules within PFSense to enforce these quotas and restrictions effectively. Let me know if you'd like more detailed guidance!

Service Quality or QoS available, but I'm uncertain about the exact features you need.

This setup isn't straightforward in pfSense. You can use the bandwidth shaper feature to assign static IPs and restrict speeds. Capping traffic at 2Mbit will reduce quality for bandwidth-heavy services like Netflix or YouTube, saving data. The Squid package also offers caching capabilities that can further ease bandwidth demands. Capitve Portal works well for controlling user access, but with only two users it may require more than just technical limits to achieve the desired control. Good luck with your configuration!

QoS in PF-Sense functions as a traffic shaper. In the traffic shaper settings, there isn’t an option for data limits. Bandwidth controls are available, but they relate to network speeds rather than data caps. This doesn’t match the data limit feature you were looking for.

I’d like to configure it at the router level for unified management and turn this into a hands-on learning opportunity. Additionally, I want these settings applicable to mobile devices as well.

You’d likely need top-tier hardware purchased for business environments, built for large groups of users at once.
