Establish a direct link between laptop and Truenas server.
Hi everyone, I just finished assembling a Truenas build and need to link it directly to my laptop using Ethernet. Since permanent cables aren’t feasible, I’m trying to connect everything without relying on the router for wired access. The server is running fine, and I can reach its web interface from my laptop when the NAS is plugged into the router. But when I connect both devices directly over Ethernet, I can’t ping the NAS’s static IP or open the GUI. As others suggested, I’ve set static IPs for both the laptop and the server. The router settings are: 192.168.0.1, Laptop at 192.168.0.250, NAS at 192.168.0.251. They’re on the same subnet, which seems crucial. Also, when I link the NAS to the laptop via Ethernet, the Network and Sharing Center shows it’s detecting an unknown network. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Set up a fixed IP on the physical network interface as well as on the wireless connection within that range. This prevents the device from using an automatic assignment and ensures a consistent address.
