Essential RAM options available in single or dual tiers – current knowledge is limited
I'm purchasing some Crucial RAM for a new NAS. Many reviews mention that certain NAS models need dual-rank RAM. My NAS hasn't been updated in over a year, yet it wasn't listed on Crucial's compatibility page. After selecting the RAM, I reached out to Crucial to verify if it's single or dual rank. They replied that the part number CT2K8G4SFRA266 is available in both single and dual-rank versions right now, but they noted this configuration might change in the future without notice. If you order a non-specific part, we can check its actual ranking once it arrives. This seems confusing to me, even though I'm not a tech expert.
Rank could be important because some NAS models aren't built to support very large memory modules. For instance, a 16GB with 8x2GB chips would require 16 chips totaling 16GB, but a 16GB with 1x8GB chips only needs 8 chips. If the NAS is limited to handling up to 1GB chips, it wouldn't work for the larger configuration. With 8GB sticks, using 512Mb or 1Gb chips works fine. I believe ECC technology is what NAS systems favor instead.
They essentially confirm the old RAM was dual-rank, but they upgraded production using new ICs with double the storage, eliminating the need for dual-rank. I question the necessity of dual-rank for NAS systems—I don’t see much advantage. Generally true, though not always a requirement. With higher capacity ICs now available, many 16GB modules operate as single rank.
Dual-rank offers marginally better results, though for a NAS it's unclear why it's needed and what the term really stands for. It seems necessary only to enable a slight boost, perhaps around 5%.
