Hi Everyone, I've been assembling my gaming rigs every 4 or 5 years for over 20 years, always using Crucial RAM without issues. I loved Crucial RAM and was surprised to learn Micron stopped selling their Ballistix line. I managed to purchase one of the last 32GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3600 kits on Amazon before they ran out a few months ago. Now I'm curious—do any RAM manufacturers include Micron chips in their gaming products? I see Samsung and SK Hynix but not Micron. Anyone has information on this? Thanks!

Many companies selling DRAM that don’t manufacture their own chips include Micron in certain product lines. Corsair does this, but you must identify exact models. Simply mentioning a name like Vengeance isn’t sufficient since some versions may use Hynix, Micron, or Samsung instead.

Many companies selling DRAM that don’t manufacture their own chips include Micron in certain product lines. Corsair does this, but you must identify exact models. Simply mentioning a name like Vengeance isn’t sufficient since some versions may use Hynix, Micron, or Samsung instead.

Generally, most products incorporate Micron memory ICs into their memory modules. The problem lies in the fact that none of these devices consistently rely on Micron chips across all their memory options. Manufacturers typically select the available memory ICs on the production floor for that particular batch. This can vary—sometimes it's Micron, other times Samsung, Nanya, or Hynix (especially during DDR3). The exception occurs when the DIMM supplier is owned by an IC maker like Crucial or Klevv, or when you're restricted to specific brands.

Samsung B die on DDR4 was straightforward since it was the sole IC capable of precise tRCD settings, making kits like 3200 CL14-14-14-34 reliable. This situation can shift over time; kits once guaranteed by one IC may later include multiple options. For example, DDR5 kits were historically tied to Hynix M die, but now Hynix A die is also present.

Finding Micron memory can be tricky because its configurations aren’t locked into fixed memory categories. In DDR4, high-performance tweaks are possible with Hynix CJR, DJR, or JJR chips, whereas DDR5 settings are restricted mainly to Samsung or Hynix ICs. This means you’ll often see them in JEDEC/4800 and 5200MT/s ranges. Micron performed better in DDR4 for timing precision, but in DDR5 it lagged significantly compared to other options.

Additionally, why would someone prefer exclusively Micron memory? Both Hynix and Samsung are dependable and can handle advanced settings. OEM kits from Micron and Crucial still exist, and if Micron introduces a top-tier IC in the future, they’d likely expand their lineup to include a new sub-brand under Crucial. The main point was probably about naming confusion with the Ballistix series rather than a direct gaming RAM issue.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You've been with Crucial since the early 90s and have had no issues there. Since I don’t often upgrade my PCs, I’m not usually searching for specific parts. I’m hoping DDR5 gaming products from Micron will launch soon—they seem slow right now. Corsair’s new DDR5 looks good, but it might take a few years before it’s available. I’ll keep an eye on the market. Thanks again!
