You're encountering a common issue when installing Linux on an external drive. The error "unknown file system" often points to problems with the bootloader or the drive's configuration. The specific message about "/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod not found" suggests that the GRUB configuration file isn't present in the expected location. Try checking your drive's partition layout, ensuring the correct GRUB entry point is set, and verifying the installation media. If issues persist, consult your hardware documentation or seek further support.

Never encountered a problem and no one responded—I assume no one could find a fix. I managed to determine the steps after about an hour of looking. I had to resort to boot-repair to reinstall Grub.
