You have flexibility with your motherboard's boot settings. Since it defaults to UEFI, switching to Legacy mode could resolve drive issues. Upgrading to Windows 11 might also help. Consider testing both options.
It includes UEFI by default because that’s what Windows 11 requires. I think Windows 10 doesn’t fully utilize the technology in a Z970 board and its CPU. Think of it like having a brand-new engine with injectors but running it with a 70s distributor that needs an ECU to automatically manage fuel. You might get it to run, but you won’t achieve peak performance. If you want to install Windows 11, disconnect or disable all drives except one so Windows doesn’t boot the wrong bootloader and cause problems later—it’s quite convenient, though a bit annoying. That’s why we always suggest keeping only one drive enabled during installation.
Typically I handle the hardware side better than the software side. Right now I have these setups: Evo 970 Pro 1TB NVMe (Windows installed), Evo 990 Pro 2TB NVMe (new drive, not formatted), Samsun SSD 500G (model unclear), WDB HDD 1TB (old drive). If you're like me and want to run Windows 11 smoothly without issues or messing up the drives, what would you do?
I would leave out everything except the 2TB drive and connect it to the fastest NVMe port via PCIe4. I believe the 990 Pro is the best option on PCIe4, and always opt for the fastest drive for Windows. Updating drivers and cache files can also boost performance. To prevent issues with boot partitions or reusing old disks, remove all other components. This ensures everything stays on your 990 Pro. An HDD could actually hinder performance unless you disable indexing for that disk. After installation, I’d transfer necessary files from the previous setup and clear it, then move the contents to the 970 Pro if needed. Finally, connect the SSD and decide how you want your drive letters arranged.
