I recently felt the urge to revisit classic CS 1.6. It's been a while since I played, but I wanted to give it another go for fun. When I attempted to launch it, I encountered: "Could not load hw.dll" followed by "Please try again later." I searched online, but none of the solutions worked—I found discussions about third-party anti-cheats (which I don’t own) or outdated links. I tried copying hw.dll from the Half-Life folder, but that didn’t help. I also replaced hl.exe with a copy from the HL directory, which failed with another error. After uninstalling CS 1.6, renaming the remaining folder and reinstalling, the game still wouldn’t fully download. I attempted to copy some original files back in hopes of forcing a re-download, but that also didn’t succeed. I’m stuck and don’t feel motivated enough to spend much time on it. However, I’d appreciate any simple fixes or insights I might have missed. Also, note that the installation I was using has been on my PC since Steam’s early days (late 2000s), surviving multiple Windows reinstalls, and hasn’t been used in a while. It should have been resolved with a clean reinstall, but Steam isn’t cooperating right now. I’d consider checking the Steam forums, though they’re inactive lately, and would value any advice or theories you can share. Thanks.
