I've faced some challenges during recent Windows reinstalls. Regardless of my efforts, the installer reaches the end but before completion it reports "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase." Occasionally it even indicates failure before showing any green confirmation. I've experimented with various approaches: switching ISOs, employing different USB drives (Lexar & Sandisk), utilizing a disc installer, disabling other drives during installation, eliminating extra peripherals except keyboard and mouse, changing USB ports for installers, flashing the USB as MBR then GPT, using UEFI/CSM settings, and even switching to a completely different drive. When I used Rufus 3.13 with an ISO from Microsoft, Windows Media Creation, or a Windows 10 archive, none succeeded. This issue is frustrating since I managed to install Arch Linux and a Hackintosh without problems on the same drive. If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ahead of time.

Consider potential RAM issues; run a MemTest86 check. If applicable, disable XMP settings.

Testing with MemTest86 and XMP turned off. Poor RAM might prevent Windows from installing. Update notes: no issues after three attempts. Edited by mjmalec on Jan 6, 2021.

Consider using gparted to erase the entire drive completely—don’t partition or modify anything, just clear it. Then look into your BIOS settings for secure boot options. If it’s active, you can attempt to disable it and switch on Legacy (CSM). I’ve experienced odd problems with this setup before. Linux behaves differently from Windows and tends to be more tolerant of BIOS issues in my experience. (Uncertain about whether it works on a hackintosh unless it uses the Linux bootloader.)

Using Windows' built-in utility on a USB drive could be a safer option. I was hesitant about Rufus for Windows before.

I've already attempted this, but the outcomes remain the same. I'll test with gparted—since it's an SSD and that might help. I've turned off secure boot, yet Legacy and UEFI don't affect anything except the Windows installer's display resolution. For the Hackintosh, I'm running OpenCore.

That's unusual. What kind of brand is the SSD? I own a WD Blue SSD that stopped functioning properly, according to WD software, but Windows wouldn't load and Linux installation failed. I reformatted it three times from Sunday and eventually gave up because it was outside warranty. It sat in a drawer for about five months before I finally pulled it out to test it in a junk drawer. Restoring data from another system worked perfectly now. Hope this helps. I'm running out of ideas.

I own a brand new Samsung 860 EVO. It was running smoothly on Windows before I restarted my PC, but it wouldn’t boot back in. That’s why I decided to reinstall. I cleared the drive with the Windows installer and haven’t managed to get it working yet. I’ll update you on how GParted performs. Appreciate your assistance so far.
