I don't understand what occurred. It seems I can't modify /etc/hosts in $ su or sudo vim or sudo nano. I'm only attempting to change this file because I suspect it's causing the problem below. Usually, I get either "sudo: unable to resolve host <host>: Resource temporarily unavailable" or an error about the file being read-only, even when trying to run the editor with sudo. Help needed? Ubuntu Server 18.04

Can you post the contents of those files? Use cat or an editor without sudo, you only need to read them.
