The Windows 10 installation key you need is typically the product key provided during purchase or available from Microsoft. If you haven’t upgraded first, you’ll need to obtain it through the official Microsoft website or authorized retailers.

I'm changing to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. You mentioned something about a key, but I need to clarify if that refers to a product code or something else.

The product key is essential for installing Windows 10. Without it, you can't set up the operating system. You usually receive the key when you purchase the software or after an upgrade from Microsoft.

I possess an authentic version of Windows 8.1 and am attempting to transition to Windows 10. I managed the upgrade on my parents' machine from Windows 7 without issues, but I wish I had known sooner.

It might be an antivirus program or a driver issue, such as from the GPU, rather than a general software conflict.

These situations are common. Installing Windows 10 via a fresh install requires a product key, which you only have if you purchased it or obtained it during an update. This explains why a fresh install isn't possible—similar issues exist for others. Ensure your operating system hasn’t been pirated and failed Microsoft’s validation checks, as updates will be blocked. This isn’t related to GPU drivers or antivirus software. Refer to the mentioned post for details; you’re not alone with this error.

I bought my Windows 8.1 copy, so it’s not that. I’m not attempting a full reinstall of 10, just an upgrade. Thank you for your assistance! I’m following the instructions and in Device Manager I see three 'Generic Volume' entries in storage volumes after hiding devices. Should I remove them? Edit: I saw a comment saying the same thing, but I don’t mind.
