Error encountered while activating Windows.
I just updated the whole setup, except the storage had Windows already installed. I just moved my old drive into the new system. But the PC keeps asking me to activate Windows, and when I do, it shows this error.
Do you have internet access? Are your network interface cards and Wi-Fi card drivers installed? Windows might not start properly if you purchased an OEM license. These should be linked to the devices they were initially activated on.
Windows activation is linked to the physical device. It's frustrating, but that's how it works. I've changed a few programs and had to re-activate them. It's been about ten years now, but the last time I did it I discovered a way to move the installation to new hardware. You can only do this a few times, and it was quite challenging, but it was achievable.
If the previous computer was an OEM model from companies like Dell, HP or Lenovo, or if you purchased an OEM Windows license, activating it on new hardware won't work because OEM licenses are for single use. You might attempt to contact the support number that appears when you mention activation issues, but only genuine retail copies of Windows can be moved between PCs after hardware upgrades.
They refer to different product codes. OEM licenses cost less and usually come with the physical hardware, while Retail licenses can be used on new devices. These are distinct SKUs with varying features. You can find more details here: https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows...B09MYJ1R6L
