Error encountered during startup: B2 code.
Hi All! I watched a YouTube video and my PC restarted with an error code 97. After taking out the GPU and putting it back, the issue appeared (error b2). Removing the GPU from my system lets me log into Windows, but without a GUI since I lack integrated graphics. Every time I reinsert it, the same error keeps happening. I also tried moving it to different slots.
My setup:
- Motherboard: ASUS WS X299 Sage
- CPU: Intel i7 9800X
- GPU: Zotac GeForce RTX 3090
- RAM: 128GB DDR4 @ 3200Mhz
- Other PCI card: ASUS Beacon AC68
Someone in Discord suggested my PCIe rail might be dead. Could that be the cause? I also lowered the GPU voltage to 50% the day before the crash, thinking it was drawing too much power. Have tried many fixes already. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
I checked additional information about error code 97. Pay close attention to what was mentioned. As you noted, the PCI-E rail might be faulty, as described in a user’s link. They provided a possible solution, though it could be challenging to implement. "Confirm by unplugging the PCIe power cables and ensuring the card is placed in the PCIe slot. The card will attempt to boot but will show an error when trying to connect PCIe cables. If the PCIe rail is non-functional, the motherboard will act as if no GPU is present, only displaying code 97 while the "power good" signal isn’t available. This issue might be fixed by connecting a wire from the PCIe connector to the PCIe shunt input. It’s possible that if this connection bridges or shorts downstream components, further damage could occur." The alternative would be testing another graphics card to see if it boots as another user did in the link. Therefore, you may need to return the graphics card for inspection. If you still can’t resolve it, contact ASUS for a replacement. "Still no progress. I swapped my 3090 for a 970 and it’s functioning well so far. Have you received any updates on when I should receive a replacement? What is the typical RMA processing time?"
I'm experiencing the error message "b2" whether or not cables are connected to my GPU. I'm checking if that cable functions but don't want to damage any parts. I also don't have another GPU available. Perhaps taking it to a repair shop would be the best option?
I feel anxious about handling the wire, but I’m confident you can manage it. The repair shop could be a good choice. It might be wiser to figure out the GPU or PCI-E rail slot first. At least they’ll have another GPU available for testing since you don’t have one.
I’ll take care of it and get back to you soon. Thanks for your patience so far.
Editing: Perhaps the universe is urging me to pause or reminding me to upgrade my graphics card and processor to avoid bottlenecks.
My friend arrived with his old computer, and his graphics card starts in my PC while mine stays silent. I suspect the GPU is damaged, should I request a replacement or repair? * Should I ask for an RMA? (I don’t have the receipt because it’s a used item) * Purchase a BIOS flasher for the GPU and attempt to fix it manually?
Reach out to the GPU seller for the receipt. Familiarize yourself with their return policy to determine if the manufacturer needs a receipt online. Most do. If there’s no flashing or visible changes on the GPU, that approach probably won’t work. The seller might clarify whether they had it before you.
