I recently set up my new PC, using an old SSD from my previous machine. Now I'm having trouble activating the operating system—it keeps saying I can't because the earlier version wasn't activated before switching to Windows 10. Even though I have the activation key, it only offers me to purchase a new one.

Yes, I understand. Windows OEM licenses cannot be transferred. Only retail licenses are valid. It seems you may have purchased an OEM license before or your previous setup included one.

I received the key from Walmart, packaged in a box containing both the CD and the activation key. It was tied to my Microsoft account. This wasn't a ready-made system; it came from my very first PC.

This key is designed for Windows OS. When you installed it on the old PC, you were last using Windows 7 Pro. Please send the UPC code from the Walmart packaging and the CoA label (with the key text hidden) so we can confirm it's a genuine retail key.

The original system was Windows 8.1, but you only have the key from a text file on your USB. The current OS is 10. Degrading it back to 8.1 might help, but activating it could still be tricky without proper documentation.

You'll need to install Windows 8.1 for the key to function. The free upgrade to Windows 10 is no longer available, so you'll remain on 8.1. You can generate the installation media at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software...d/windows8
