My desktop has been running smoothly until recently. While streaming Netflix and working on 3D prints in Cura, my screen froze and showed a translated image before going black. I tried a hard reset using the power button, but nothing worked—Windows didn’t respond with Ctrl+Alt+Del. After rebooting, only the main monitor booted up, using the fallback graphics driver, and it kept showing random red dots. Once I restarted again, the resolution returned to normal, though the red dots remained, leaving just the primary display active. I attempted to reinstall drivers, but NVIDIA blocked it, saying the GPU was faulty. I removed the GPU to see if Intel integrated graphics would help. I’m starting to think my GPU is dead and might need a replacement. For the driver side, I’m considering an RTX 2060 Super with a budget under €700. My setup has poor airflow due to an older case, which could affect performance. The "%SystemRoot%\Minidump" folder looks empty, and the PREFMON didn’t produce a report in over ten minutes. Performance-wise, the GTX780 worked well, but my case’s poor cooling might be a problem. Stats show Windows 10 Pro (22H2), installed on 2020-08-20 with SSD upgrade. I purchased a refurbished 2070 super (upgraded from a gtx 770) and it has worked well with my 1080p 144hz display. Due to the recent drop in cryptocurrency values and an oversupply of cards, you can now find used 10/20/30 series models at reasonable prices. The only consideration is potential CPU limitations—most cards from the past few years will perform adequately while using less power and generating less heat.
