Ensuring sufficient power (watts) for an i5 processor with 980 Ti/1080 overclocking is essential.
Hi guys,
I'm planning to assemble a new PC with an i5 6600k and a GPU of either a 980ti (MSI lightning edition) or a 1080 (if the 980ti is not sufficient). The main issue is selecting the right power supply. I'm estimating around 480 watts, but I've heard that more power is better. So the real question is: will a 550-watt PSU be adequate?
No problem at all! If it works fine, could you recommend a suitable power supply—something like an EVGA or Corsair semi-modular would be okay? I'd appreciate any suggestions and hope to keep the cost down.
Thanks a lot!
For overclocking? No. For operating a non-overclocked system it's okay. However, altering the CPU voltages will boost power rapidly and then lead to an overload. Use a reliable supply from brands like EVGA, Seasonic, XFX, etc., ensuring at least 750W.
Expect that you'll be overclocking your CPU and VGA, here are my thoughts:
600W decent PSU for a single graphics card setup (a bit excessive, but it should handle all the OC parts and LED lighting in your case maybe) (remember, the EVGA 980ti kingpin needed 2x8pins and 1x6pins, lol)
850W decent PSU if you intend to upgrade later with another 1080
), and if you purchase something like an EVGA kingpin series, you need a power supply that can support at least three graphics cards, so you'll have enough cables for your VGA.
you should consider a high-quality 650w power supply (evga g2 gs) or any xfx (not xt), seasonal model
