I think I should understand this, but I’m not really into learning. My build has a 9900KS and an H150i CLC, yet the CPU still runs at 4.0 GHz by default. I haven’t tried overclocking before, and I feel like this should be straightforward, but how do I make it run consistently at 5.0 GHz across all eight cores? It seems like I bought a Ferrari and am driving it like a minivan—thinking the 5.0 GHz was meant for constant high performance. Sorry if I’m missing something, but I’d love to figure this out. When testing with tools like AIDA64 or other benchmark suites, does it reach 5GHz? That speed is the maximum performance level. You can set it to maintain that speed in Windows through power settings, but it's best to verify it's functioning properly and increasing it when needed before adjusting.
Yesterday night I restored my operating system, and now only a single 512 GB M.2 SSD is active. On the sixth day I intend to add two more 1 TB SSDs and begin reinstalling Steam and games. However, when checking the BIOS of my motherboard, the CPU reports a clock speed of 4.0 GHz. I understand I need to enable an overclocking feature to reach 5.0 GHz, but I’m unsure how or where to do that since this is new territory for me. I’m currently searching for guidance and information.
When you own a Ferrari, you adjust your pace based on what’s realistic and required. Similarly, your CPU doesn’t operate at full speed continuously. It should only run at high speeds when necessary—like during video rendering or 3D modeling—and even then, only briefly. Running at maximum all the time wastes energy and can affect performance. For best results, limit it to specific tasks and keep power usage in check. (P.S. Avoid using Task Manager; use tools like HWInfo64 or CPU-Z for accurate frequency info.)
4 GHz is the standard base frequency, while 5 GHz operates as a turbo mode—only visible when under load, not in the BIOS. When you load the CPU, you’ll notice the frequencies change accordingly, such as in tools like HWiNFO64 or Windows Task Manager. The processor typically reduces its speed at idle to conserve energy, but the BIOS likely doesn’t implement power-saving features. In Windows, you’ll see much lower idle frequencies compared to 4 GHz.
The main draw of the KS is its ability to handle single and multi-core tasks at 5.0 GHz consistently, which was the key feature that caught my attention initially. In my view, I should be able to observe the CPU operating at 5 GHz when nothing is running and I'm using the Windows Desktop. Please let me know if this is incorrect—I’m still figuring it out.
It makes sense now. Reaching 5.0 GHz is logical. Upgrading from the 5960X to this chip should help with gaming performance. When you need high speeds like 5 GHz, the processor will function properly without any additional settings required.
