It's time to be honest. The first part of overcoming your addiction is recognizing you have one. I struggle with clutter. *sigh* I still have all those 'My Documents' folders from when I was ten. That's been going on since I was ten. Now at 27, restoring my system feels natural. But what should I do to get back to where it was? Wallpaper, screen settings, network options, VPN setup, shortcuts—everything. What backup methods exist before a fresh install? Are there tools that make this simple? (Excluding just the photos and movies)

I just turned 26 and have every file from my childhood. All of them are saved on my server. My computers don’t store any documents or data locally. This lets me retrieve anything I need anytime, anywhere—provided there’s internet. It’s been really useful in tough situations. So I don’t have to back up my PC before a clean install because there are no important files to protect.

Switching between different versions of Windows feels almost identical, though it's still not flawless. Most features that sync with a Microsoft account work through the operating system settings. For software-specific adjustments, you'll need to perform some manual steps. If you're using Firefox or Chrome, take advantage of their built-in syncing tools to keep bookmarks and many settings intact. For other programs, manually transfer settings from My Documents, AppData/Roaming, or the software's installation directory—keep a note of the file paths in Notepad for restoration. Some applications lack straightforward options. Especially with MS Office, and additional tweaks in Firefox. Utilize any native backup functions available in the software. For folders like My Documents and Desktop, simply copy and paste everything. Shortcuts can be challenging, but using the default file paths often restores things correctly once the related software is set up.

For the shortcuts I use dedicated apps that manage them automatically. (Finding the executable path and updating it) - Chrome manages all sync from the account in-app - Steam library is stored elsewhere, no issues. Installing it into that folder should locate everything. It seems the themes might differ completely between W8 and W10. I already have a perfectly set monitor configuration, screensaver, and power-saving settings. Of course, I can adjust them individually when I spot problems. But what if there was a tool for backing that up? That would be great. I wonder if once I switch to W10 my Windows account will handle these settings automatically. I haven’t tried W10 yet because of driver compatibility problems, even though I consider myself a Windows expert.

I'm facing some issues. My DisplayFusion setup for dual screens in Win7 has restored settings, making everything almost normal again. The only difference since switching from Win7 to Windows 10 was the color scheme and DPI adjustments. It took a few hours to fine-tune everything, especially with the color theme requiring precise RGB values from old screenshots.

I decided to leave AppData due to its massive size. Perhaps it’s worth checking what’s consuming all that space—I might need to retain it if I realize I’ve lost some presets I spent a lot of time setting in an app. Manually copying one app from AppData helped, since I couldn’t find any other settings, and I assumed keeping it was important.

Roaming is the main area for most settings. You probably don’t need browser tools because they’re stored in the cloud. Or any other app with backup features. The local folder keeps most temporary and cache data.

I made the time and space to handle the complete AppData. Thanks for letting me know it stores many settings.
