Enhance your Dell Optiplex 745 with the latest upgrades.
I possess a Dell OptiPlex 645 Mini Tower (the largest available). Below are my specifications: CPU – Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 2x2.13, 4GB RAM DDR2 at 800MHz, 2x213GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 120, and a 305W power supply. My first upgrade plan is to replace the CPU with a high-end model. The top recommendation I heard is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. Do you think this would be the optimal choice for your setup? Regarding the graphics, you mentioned needing a low-profile GPU with an X16 architecture. Your PCIe slot is 1.0, but your BIOS supports up to 2.1. The person in the video suggested the GTX 730 2B is suitable, though it claims it needs 350W power. Since you have a PCIe 1 and a 2.1 GPU, it likely won’t run at full capacity, so I wouldn’t recommend exceeding that power limit. I’d prefer a more affordable option if possible—something budget-friendly from eBay, preferably compatible with AMD or Intel with ATML support and NVIDIA compatibility if you want optimization features like Shadow Play. If you’re okay with a used model, I understand. I’m open to finding one from Seris that has NVIDIA support and gaming enhancements. Please let me know the best GPU option and confirm whether the CPU setup is suitable for your needs. Also, tell me if you’d like to keep overclocking or stick to safe settings on both CPU and GPU.
What are you planning to do with it? You shared this on a PC gaming forum, so I guess you're not relying solely on Word. It's unlikely you'll run games on that machine even after upgrading; the best way to try something new would be with a completely different PC.
Considering a fresh build might be the best choice. This Dell model is quite old and its proprietary nature means any upgrades will likely be limited, making a new setup more practical. Starting with a new computer would save you time and effort in the long run.
I prefer not to upgrade my PC because I have issues with games running in low settings. My main concern is enjoying the theme, not pushing performance limits. I’ve played Dota 2 for three years and it’s not overly demanding. I usually run it at around 60-70 frames per second when nothing happens, dropping to about 45fps during fights (using 1400x900p textures with low settings). I believe a Q6600 with a 2GB GPU can handle any game smoothly at 1650x1050 resolution (16:10 on my monitor). I don’t need advanced features like VSync or anti-aliasing unless it affects resolution or texture quality. If games aren’t competitive, I’m okay with playing at around 30fps. I’d just want a solid CPU and a decent GPU if you can find one that fits me. Thanks!
