Encountering problems when turning on XMP to boost RAM performance
I recently purchased some new RAM and aim to get the most out of it by turning on XMP. Here are the details of my PC parts. CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x Motherboard: ASRock B450 Steel Legend Bios version 4.6 (the latest stable BIOS, not in Beta) GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4070 12GB RAM: Two 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3600MHz units installed in slots 2 and 4, as per the motherboard instructions. The BIOS suggests setting RAM speed to auto, which is currently at 2133MHz—significantly slower than the rated 3600MHz. This bottleneck is affecting game performance, especially during gaming sessions. When XMP is enabled, the system boots normally and applications load without issues. However, once a game starts, it either crashes or becomes extremely sluggish and freezes. Changing the BIOS back to auto mode and reverting to 2133MHz allows games to run smoothly. I've tested other BIOS versions, including an older one (version 3.7), but none resolved the problem. RAM speeds I've tried (3000, 3066, 3200MHz) all result in similar issues. The default voltage is 1.35V, and adjusting it by ±0.05V hasn't improved performance. I've also experimented with 1.30V, 1.40V, and 1.45V, but nothing works. I've read online that updating the BIOS to the latest version helped some users run their RAM at 3200 or 3600MHz without trouble. I haven't had the same success. My graphics drivers are up to date.
Did you review the QVL details on your motherboard to confirm compatibility and performance before purchasing RAM? Not every CPU supports fast memory due to weak controllers, which can limit speed. You might adjust voltage and timing settings on the stick to improve chances of success. However, you may need to accept a 2666MT/s speed limit—especially with Corsair products like the vengeance line for certain Ryzen models, which aren’t ideal.
Updating the BIOS is a good idea but that doesn't guarantee that the compatibility for your RAM was improved. One thing that popped into mind is : Did you try resetting the CMOS ? This is an easy task and is recommend after any hardware modification of core components in your computer. Another thing you can try is to change the CAS latency. Some controllers on some boards are not fully up to spec and increasing the latency a bit may help your memory perform better (but not always). Good luck !
I haven't tried it yet, but I might attempt it after work. Fingers crossed it works.
My friend has a Ryzen 9 5900x with identical RAM, but a different motherboard, and he's not having any problems. I guess I just get these issues sometimes, huh?
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad everything worked out. There were no problems with the RAM or motherboard. After checking CPU temperatures and overclocking the RAM, it was running at around 90°C, which caused thermal throttling and made games nearly impossible. I found the thermal paste had dried out, so I cleaned it off and applied a fresh batch of Corsair XTM70 paste. Now the system stays under 40°C and only reaches about 70°C during gaming. Once the CPU cooled down, I was able to run RAM at full speed without any issues.
