Encountered problems with installing Linux, software, or hardware?
I've been attempting to set up Linux on my daily driver desktop for a few days now, but progress has been slow. Here are the details:
Hardware:
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E
- RAM: 64GB DDR4 at 3600MHZ
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2070
- Storage: 1TB NVMe, 2TB NVMe, 1TB SATA SSD, 4TB SATA SSD with cooling
- Display: 24" Mission SG + 24" Mission SG + 39" Samsung Odyssey QLED
Installation attempts:
- Tried Ubuntu – installation froze or reset to Windows.
- Tried Debian – same issue, rebooted after selection.
- Tried Mint – worked but ran slowly; needed to disable Secure Boot via BIOS.
- Experienced performance drops in Steam and games like GTA V, Portal 2, and even when playing on Steam.
Troubleshooting steps:
- Removed "PK Management Key" in BIOS to disable Secure Boot.
- Used Flatpak for better stability but still faced lag.
- Rebooted after installing Linux Mint Cinnamon Edge.
- Encountered random CPU errors and system crashes during installation.
Current situation:
- Linux Mint Cinnamon Edge started but became unstable.
- Performance issues persist, especially with games and Steam.
- No clear solution seems to resolve the instability.
Anyone have insights on what might be causing these problems? I've tried multiple approaches without success.
Linux stability depends on various factors; disabling global C-state in BIOS may help but isn't a guaranteed fix. Adjusting the GRUB boot command to force C-state 1 could resolve certain issues. Check kernel logs for more details using journalctl.
Ubuntu, Mint, and Debian share a similar foundation with closely related source code. Fedora often presents inconsistent performance across different hardware, rarely being the most bug-free option. Some alternatives offer better reliability. PCLinuxOS provides a community release at the link above. ROSA Fresh Desktop is available for download. Mageia hosts the mageia.iso file. Magieia also offers OpenMandriva. Clear Linux has its own download page. EndeavourOS and ALT Linux feature tested distributions. OpenSUSE is listed with its latest version. Void Linux provides a download link. Artix Linux details are provided. Void Linux also has an ISO available.
It seems the NVIDIA driver isn't being installed, causing a conflict where the graphics drivers compete over which GPU should handle the rendering task.
