I took this old machine and handed it over to someone familiar. The only thing missing was a hard drive, so I added that. Now I just needed a Windows 10 copy. I placed a supposed installation file on a flash drive and tried to start from there. But I keep running into problems each time. It seems the setup would work better without the installation media inside. I downloaded it from the official site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software.../windows10. I also ran the setup on the flash drive on my own computer first, just to confirm it was ready for another machine before attempting to boot it elsewhere.

I didn't just copy files onto the flash drive; I used a tool to burn them in.

When you download it from that link, it generates the installation media. I transferred the entire file onto the flash drive and began the setup process to prepare it. After the setup completed, I transferred it to another computer to start the boot sequence.

That’s the issue. Do you have the ISO file available? If so, run Rufus (portable version works too) and proceed with the setup process.

It really doesn't matter whether you use Rufus or MCT. The issue could be that the drive has an ISO file attached, which you're attempting to burn. The ISO should be in a different place, like the Desktop or Downloads folder.

I followed your instructions carefully, verified everything was set up properly. A blinking dash appears in the upper left corner, but no other output. I checked a YouTube tutorial to confirm the correct usage of Rufus. The files in the USB drive are present, yet the computer seems unresponsive.

For an old machine, get the previous Rufus release that supports creating bootable USBs in legacy mode. I’m having issues with Rufus 3.x right now.

Visit your settings and set USB as the primary boot device (or search YouTube for guidance if needed).
