Hi everyone, I'm just starting with Linux and have used Mint before on my laptop. I'm setting up a server and think the main challenge is getting the LAMP stack to work, but the installation process is giving me trouble. After copying files, it says "Installing System" and then shows an error about the public IP. I believe the problem might be related to installing from a USB stick on another USB drive. I formatted the bootable drive with Rufus using MBR for BIOS, and it boots to the Mint desktop. However, when I try to install, it only lets me create a single partition and blocks me from making a swap partition. Even though my system has 32 GB of RAM, I'm not sure it's a big issue. The rest of the setup works fine, but I'm stuck at the installer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it's not recommended to install on a USB stick (just avoid that). Avoid placing a swap file there either. Flash memory quality might be lower, and wear leveling could be poor, leading to premature failure of the stick. As for the message during installation, it appears networking was interrupted and then stopped. There isn't enough detail or a clear error to confirm. Regarding partitioning, I haven't used Mint recently, so re-partitioning might not be necessary—just create partitions once at installation. However, the system might struggle to generate certain partition types (like GPT or MBR) due to limitations of USB media, which could cause the hang. This remains a speculation.

I believe the issue stemmed from a random problem when using the USB during installation, leading to a hang. I resolved it without purchasing an SSD for the boot drive. My challenge was assembling a media server from outdated components, specifically using five hard drives for main storage. I was certain my motherboard had six SATA ports, but it only had five. Consequently, I bought the smallest SSD available and a SATA III to USB cable. I wasn’t sure what was causing the installation to stall—watching many installation videos confirmed that it would hang on multiple attempts before progressing. Networking stayed active, but some searches suggested time synchronization problems. Online guides advised installing without internet, which seemed to apply in Mint 18. I ended up spending the money. Next time I’ll check if my LAMP setup and Nextcloud work with my domain on this configuration.
