Did I make a mistake? I installed PIA and downloaded a game. This resulted in an email from my ISP (Bell Canada). I’m really unsure what to do next and feel quite scared—they seem to know exactly which files were downloaded. The email mentions that receiving a notice from a content owner doesn’t necessarily mean legal action is coming. It says the IP address shown was my regular one, not the VPN IP. I also streamed the game on Twitch.tv using a facecam. Am I safe? If there’s any legal issue, how long might it take to get a response? Also, I used Utorrnet.

You're unsure about the IP details and the situation. It seems the email isn't important, and the main concern is copyright enforcement. The ISP likely doesn't care about your actions, while the copyright holder does. You probably won't face any consequences, especially if it's your first time. Regarding the IP issue, it might have been interrupted during the download or there could be a uTorrent setting involved. This isn't the right place to talk about piracy.

Acknowledge the request directly. The responsibility lies with them to prove their position. Any move you make could be seen as confirming their claim.

You earned it for skipping the jokes about qbittorrent. You might safely overlook it and find a better alternative—something like ExpressVPN for strong security or ProtonVPN for top-tier encryption, even if it covers fewer regions but remains affordable.

When in Canada, disregard those messages as spam and remove them.

Don't worry too much. This usually happens during torrenting when many businesses track peer activity and forward it automatically. The same thing occurs occasionally with my seed box. Just remember, deny it.

First, verify your VPN configuration—it should not have exposed your ISP’s IP address. It seems there might be an issue with your setup. Most copyright owners aren’t concerned with ordinary users like you; they prefer targeting those who distribute content online. In short, they’re just reminding you not to repeat the same mistake. The only situations that would really concern me are if the letter came from an attorney or legal authority. All ISPs simply forward these notices to their subscribers.
