A familiy member needs a PC for editing videos and mining. The videos aren't 4k or anything crazy so I was thinking about recomending a 10100f for such a purpose. He will start with 1 GPU but in the future he might add another one, IDK if looking for a motherboard with multiple expansion slots makes anysense in this case, how many PCIe lanes and bandwidth does a GPU need to be working at max speed?

I skip the 10100. For anything beyond basic browsing, aim for a 10400 or better. If mining the 10100 suffices, that’s sufficient. Depending on the software, an iGPU model can be suboptimal, but the GPU can handle varied tasks. Choose motherboards with available ports and current discounts. Avoid the most affordable boards—they often lack good rear I/O and other features. A GPU should fit in a PCIe 16x slot; ensure the slot is full size for proper GPU installation. Motherboards offering another full-size slot will operate at 8x, which is acceptable as long as the physical slot accommodates 16x cards.

10100f is extremely powerful, capable of handling much more than just web browsing. All he needs is to save his desktop and make minor edits to the video—that’s enough. I don’t think there’s a reason to waste double the power when it won’t be used.

Looking at the 10400 models, it seems some are currently discounted, possibly bringing them close to the 10100 price point. Considering used options could offer a superior CPU/Memory setup at a lower cost. I’d steer clear of the cheapest motherboards. A 10400 might be available for a slight premium over a brand-new 10100. My experience shows my mom upgraded from 4 cores to 6, and it made a noticeable difference for simple web browsing. She still praises its performance without hesitation. It appears this model is likely intended for mining, as there’s no apparent workload needing two GPUs with a 10100. If you’re planning heavy mining, a 2 PCIe slots board would be more cost-effective than the 10100/2 variant. Otherwise, a 10400 in a standard case will provide better value today and remain competitive for years to come.

For motherboard choices, focus on what fits your requirements within the budget. Rank by price until you find a suitable one. For dual GPUs, ensure both have full-size PCIe slots—typically two 4x or 8x slots are needed. The second slot can be 4x or 8x, but its size must accommodate the larger card. A single slot at 1x is sufficient for mining; higher speeds are only critical with extremely fast GPUs. For mining, one slot works fine even with a 3090. You could use smaller slots for mining with adapters, but eventually you’ll need more capacity and proper support components. Getting two slots on a standard case makes more sense, particularly if you plan to expand later.
