Hey! I built my first server and added freenas. I’m thinking about switching to ESXi soon and virtualizing freenas, but right now I only have freenas installed. Can I run my own WoW server on it so I can experiment and play with friends? Also, is it possible to host it inside a freenas jail? Thanks!

Set up CentOS on Linux using ZFS for storage, then enable Samba shares. Use KVM with libvirt to manage virtual machines. Avoid running FreeNAS inside VMs—stick to Vt-d instead, and steer clear of it altogether.

BSD jails work well but they only operate the host's kernel. If Wow has a BSD server app, it’s unclear why it can’t be used inside a jail. Without such an app, you’ll need to run it via Wine or employ virtualization for a different OS kernel.

Freenas is a native operating system tailored for NAS devices, clearly named to reflect its purpose—not suited for server environments. (Though rumors suggest it might offer limited virtual machine functionality.) 2: Talking about WoW servers here is a contentious subject, as it raises concerns about software piracy.
