while playing games today my CPU hit 85°C at first, I thought that was too high. Then checking the power consumption made me shocked—I was surprised it was so hot. Everything runs fine on stock settings. Can a Z170 motherboard help boost CPU performance? I’m skeptical, since I have a 6600K paired with it. I’m using two 8GB HyperX Fury 2133MHz RAM sticks without XMP enabled. It feels extremely hot, and I question the temperature readings because yesterday it only reached 75°C. My tower is a decent CMH410R RGB model, and I have a good cooler thanks to my other i5 7500 CPU that stays around 68°C during games even with a standard cooler.
HWiNFO64 is the best option for monitoring temperatures, I’d verify it first. Unless you’re doing a manual BIOS update (or the motherboard is attempting a forced change), you can safely push close to the maximum safe limits—around 100°C for these chips—without any problems.
