DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION appears during idle time, pointing to amdppm.sys
I experienced an unusual event last night—a system crash that I didn’t witness directly, but observed afterward. After a gaming session on my computer, I left it idle and left the desktop open while I prepared dinner. I remained away from the machine for at least an hour. Upon returning, I was greeted by the login screen, expecting to enter a password. When I logged in, it seemed as though my PC had been powered off after a complete shutdown or restart. This led me to suspect a BSOD occurred while I was absent. Examining Event Viewer revealed a BugCheck followed by Kernel Event 41, indicating a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. The code was 133, which suggested improper shutdown. Running WhoCrashed pointed to amdppm.sys, likely the AMD power management driver. Cross-referencing the BSOD details and the driver, I learned that switching from AMD power plans to the default Windows balanced plan might resolve it. Changing a specific registry setting also seemed effective. Additionally, disabling Freesync appeared to help. So far, I haven’t re-triggered a blue screen. The main question remains: what actually caused this BSOD, and how does amdppm.sys fit into the picture?
