I wasn't sure which part would work best. While browsing YouTube recently, a file called f.txt automatically downloaded. My search suggested it might be f.txt.js. I removed the file before hiding extensions, so I'm not certain it was there. I ran scans with Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender, but nothing came up. Someone else probably had a similar issue—seems like it came from a suspicious ad. I've added an ad-block to stop this now, but I want to get rid of it quickly so I can support sites and creators again.

It doesn't seem to be from adsense or any Google ad. Were other pages active at the same time?

This scenario hasn't occurred before. Is the 'Ask where to save each file before downloading' choice marked in the Download location settings?

I clicked the checkbox after it loaded, though it hadn't been selected before.

Open Chrome and navigate to its downloads page (Chrome://downloads). Check the source of the file you saw there.

Yeah... I refreshed the cache, but it wasn't ideal.

It’s unlikely you’ll find the source without reaching out to the NSA for browsing records. It seems it might have been a single occurrence from a questionable website that ran alongside YouTube or a dubious Google Ad.

I have their phone number for you to reach them. That means I shouldn’t be too concerned about any consequences from this situation. I thought about it from the start, but I prefer to stay cautious. A re-imaging would be a real hassle, so I’m not interested in that either.
