I recovered this old SSD from a Windows 7 laptop, appeared clean initially. After moving it to an external SATA to USB drive and connecting it to my newer laptop, Windows Defender flagged a virus and requested a scan. I performed the scan, and everything looked normal until the virus reappeared. Continuous scans kept triggering the alert. I disconnected the SSD, which eliminated the threat. Then I tested it on other devices—Windows 10 always detected the virus, while Windows 7, Vista, and XP did not. I also tried various antivirus programs, but none resolved the issue.

Check for false alarms by running a separate scan with another tool such as Malwarebytes.

Submit the file to VirusTotal for analysis. It will run against many antivirus programs and report back if most deem it safe, suggesting it might be a false positive.

No files are contaminated; the SSD has been erased and reformatted.
