I've been struggling for days to install an old Windows 3 game (Gahan Wilson's ultimate haunted house) using DOSBox with the box utility. The "this needs windows" error keeps appearing, and I can't get past it. People say DOSBox works for this before, but I'm having trouble getting it to function. Any advice? It really frustrates me.

You need to install Windows 3 first!
You must also install the S3 drivers for graphics and the SoundBlaster 16 drivers for sound.
Once you complete these steps, you can install your game in Windows 3 and play it.
https://dosbox-x.com/wiki/Guide:Installing-Windows-3.x
If you search for win3 for dosbox on Google, you'll find many guides and resources that provide pre-installed and ready-to-use packages so you don't have to do everything yourself.

I'm having trouble getting it to function. Is there a dosbox version that already includes that?

It would be illegal and no developer would attempt that, since I mentioned if you search on google it's easy to find some abandoned ware forums with ready-to-run packages. You'd still need to understand how to set up the windows folder so DOS Box recognizes it and mount the ISO of your game.

Is there a DOS version included with the game? It's quite uncommon for games from that time to be released without one.
