Doom is doomed!
Doom is doomed!
Warning: This reflects my personal take after playing the beta. Honest reflections on the DOOM Multiplayer Beta. The revival of the Arena Shooter genre starts with a poorly combined Halo and Call of Duty experience wrapped in DOOM's classic hellscape. A progression system, space marines, sluggish movement, and basic weapons without any excitement make it a decent but short 20-minute session. Most players, even casual ones, will stop and seek better options like Quake Live, which offers more depth at a lower cost. In simple terms, the game falls short and feels like a quick cash grab—hopefully the single-player mode revives the franchise.
It's puzzling why it's still classified as an arena shooter. It definitely doesn't match that vibe.
I played for 20 minutes; the optimization was awful, so I gave up. The game also feels terrible while playing it.
Totalbiscuit highlighted in his review the same concerns you raised about it feeling similar to Halo. He noted that the multiplayer isn't fully developed by id, pointing out the developer's recent work on COD multiplayers and console multiplayer. He felt this approach was meant to ease the learning curve for arena shooters, but he disagreed with that direction.
That's disappointing. I've grown tired of these repetitive FPS titles. The reason I'm shifting to other genres is now.
I was looking for a group to join for Arena FPS before, but it looks like very few people are playing now.
The issue lies in the mixed reactions from both new and established players. No one seems to enjoy the multiplayer aspect. Gamers using consoles are finding it too fast, while PC players think it's too slow. It appears the game's strong association with the name "Doom" contributed to its recent popularity. It feels very similar to other sci-fi FPS titles the player has played recently, lacking a distinct identity. Although not fundamentally flawed, it comes across as extremely repetitive and uninteresting.
