Hello,
Motherboard: B450M MSI Bazooka v2
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 → Ryzen 5 5500
Memory: Patriot Viper 4 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200
SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME
GPU: Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 580 8 GB

I am using a dual boot setup (Windows 10, Kubuntu 22.04) with grub for OS selection. This system has functioned smoothly for roughly three years with the Ryzen 5 1600. About a month ago, I upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5500 and had to update the BIOS to support it. Now, I encounter issues: the grub menu becomes unresponsive, and the system freezes upon any key press. If I don’t interact at all, the countdown reaches zero and it boots automatically into the first OS listed (Windows). Once inside Windows, everything operates correctly. However, if I can’t boot consistently elsewhere, I’m stuck in that environment. Even pressing the intro key to launch Windows without waiting the 5 seconds causes a freeze. It only functions if I wait for the process to start.

I have tried booting various live Linux distributions from different USB drives and ports, but the grub menus remain unstable. Occasionally I manage to navigate through a few options, but often it hangs at the first key press. Sometimes I can access certain distributions, though not reliably.

A Windows checkdisk test showed the SSD is functioning properly.
If I revert to the old BIOS (with the original Ryzen 5 1600), the problem disappears.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Hey there,
Have you reset the CMOS after the bios update? If not, do it now and attempt again.

Hi,
Yes, I did. But I've just reset to defaults again to confirm. It still freezes during grub interactions.
I had to turn on the "legacy" boot mode, but kept everything else as default.

I resolved it using software, but the jumper method didn't fix the problem and the issue persists.

Right now I'm uncertain whether the issue lies with the motherboard, the BIOS software, or the CPU.

I'm beginning to suspect an issue with the keyboard.
If I press 'c' in grub to access the command line, I enter it.
However, each key press seems to register as around 20 keystrokes!

Indeed, I found an old (ps2) keyboard and it works fine!
The "modern" keyboard is a Newskill Serike, connected by usb.
I tried with a usb to ps2 adapter, but then the keyboard isn't detected at all, neither in Windows.
So, it seems to suggest the BIOS upgrade somehow broke the support for the "modern" usb keyboard (!)
The funny part is that the keyboard works fine inside the BIOS software, but not in grub.
Now... what can I do? I've already contacted the Newskill, but I'm not sure if they will be able to do anything.
