I'm trying to upgrade my gaming rig with a 4790k and a 2x8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 setup. I've been hearing mixed advice about whether slower RAM will really slow things down. I don't have a specific discussion about this, so I'm not sure what to focus on next. My main concern is cooling first, but I'd like to know if faster RAM should be on my list before buying a new CPU cooler and doing some work. The 4790k isn't very memory-intensive, so it might not be worth the investment unless I eliminate any RAM bottleneck. I'm not very experienced with this stuff, so I guess it could seem like a silly question, but I really appreciate any clear advice you can give.

The multiplier adjustment only affects the Volyage and multiplier, while RAM speed remains unchanged. FSB overclocking typically requires RAM speed configurations.

I would respond with a no. You can certainly change both the CPU and RAM, and they can be adjusted separately. The benefits of faster DDR3 RAM (like 1866) over slower options are particularly noticeable in games, where FPS remains quite restricted. I recommend selecting a suitable CPU upgrade based on your cooling capacity, which should ensure your system remains functional for another 1 to 3 years depending on your requirements.
